Forest operations and badger setts
Badgers in Great Britain are protected under law, and it is an offence to damage or obstruct a sett or disturb a badger in a sett. Since these events may occur during normal management of a forest, this guide gives advice on the law concerning forest operations and badger setts, and suggests forestry practices that reduce the risk of damage and disturbance to badger setts. It is not specifically concerned with managing forest environments for the benefit of badgers but does include material which is useful in this context. It provides brief information on how to identify and locate setts, identifying protective zones, timing and managing forestry and civil engineering operations appropriately, when and where to obtain further advice, and how to apply for a licence to interfere with a sett. There is also a list of useful sources of information. This 30-page guide was published by the Forestry Commission. http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/fcpg9.pdf/$FILE/fcpg9.pdf

Traianus : corpus artium munitorum romanorum
Traianus is a website which focuses on the identification and study of Roman public infrastructures such as roads, streets, bridges, aqueducts, mines, harbours, mines, topography and walls. The site makes available a collection of research papers on this topic written mostly by civil engineers rather than archaeologists; consequently the site concentrates on technical perspectives of Roman engineering. Users will find papers on each type of Roman structure. Most of these were papers presented at the periodic "Congreso sobre las Obras Pí ºblicas Romanas" (Conference on Roman public infrastructures) and have been published in printed form in the proceedings. The papers are mostly in Spanish, but some are in English, French and Italian. It is possible to access English and French versions of the website, but translations are poor and exclude the papers, which are republished online in their original version. Online publication has allowed the authors to include colour pictures, maps and graphics to their work. Users may conduct full-text searches across the papers and subscribe to a European mailing list. This website presents the most recent research on Roman civil engineering and constitutes an invaluable reference tool on this subject. The technical character of the website makes it suitable only for researchers. The technical perspective may be useful also to researchers of any ancient public infrastructure, though all case studies presented in the papers belong to Roman archaeology. http://traianus.rediris.es/

Hydraulics of Roman aqueducts : myths, fables, realities, a hydraulician's perspective
The hydraulics of Roman aqueducts website is written by a lecturer (in civil engineering) at the University of Queensland. As well as focusing on aqueducts, the author also includes information on other water management systems (such as various types of modern dams) including a history of arch dams. Detailed photographs of a limited selection (about half a dozen) of Roman aqueducts are provided, which are largely confined to those in France (such as the Gier and Brévenne aqueducts in Lyon), as this is where the best examples are found. A select, but useful introductory, bibliography on Roman aqueducts is included, as are a handful of links to other websites relating to specific aqueducts (such as the Mons and Gorze aqueducts). http://www.uq.edu.au/~e2hchans/rom_aq.html

Planning of Airports for the New Large Aircraft
This is a University of Calgary, Department of Civil Engineering PhD thesis, by Alexandre Gomes de Barros, dated June 2001. Owing to their larger dimensions and seat capacity, the new generation of very large transport aircraft such as the A380 Airbus will impact on the planning and operation of airports. this thesis focuses on the issues related to passenger terminal planning. Five main issues are analysed in detail: the gate requirement, the terminal configuration, the sizing of the departure lounge, the processing of passengers and the design of the baggage claim area. It concentrates on developing mathematical models that will help in the early stages of airport planning. Thus an analytical approach is chosen with the use of deterministic models suitable for when important decisions must be made with little data available. Several separate models are developed to analyse the five issues cited above. Bibliographic and abstract details are available in HTML format. The full text of the thesis Planning of Airports for the New Large Aircraft is accessible online in PDF format. This title is part of Library and Archives (LAC) Canada's theses collection. Access is provided via the Theses Canada Portal. http://amicus.collectionscanada.ca/s4-bin/Main/ItemDisplay?l=0&l_ef_l=2&id=28429
